NASA’s space shuttle program began with Enterprise – the space shuttle orbiter was named in honor of everyone’s favorite television series – and it would only be fitting if the space shuttle program were to end with a touch of Star Trek as well.
And you can make it happen.
Two space shuttle missions remain, STS-133 and STS-134, and NASA is inviting the public to vote on the crew wakeup songs for mission STS-133. That mission, Discovery’s 35th trip to the International Space Station and the 133rd overall space shuttle flight, will find its crew -- Commander Steven Lindsey, Pilot Eric Boe and Mission Specialists Alvin Drew, Michael Barratt, Tim Kopra and Nicole Stott -- delivering and installing the Permanent Multipurpose Module, the Express Logistics Carrier 4 and providing critical spare components to the International Space Station. According to NASA, the Multipurpose Module will be a permanent fixture at the Station for supply storage.
Over at NASA’s site, visitors can pick -- from 40 previous wakeup songs – two that will be played for the Discovery/STS-133 crew by the Mission Control Center. Among the options are “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf, “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles, “Blue Sky” by Big Head Todd, “She Blinded Me with Science” by Thomas Dolby, “Countdown” by Rush, “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and, of course, the “Star Trek Theme Song” by Alexander Courage.
Right now, the “Star Trek Theme Song” is in the lead with 455,743 votes, besting “Magic Carpet Ride” (320,274 votes), “Blue Sky” (278,400) and “Countdown” (257,543). If you want to help keep the “Star Trek Theme Song” on top, vote for it at here. Days and times the winning songs will be played for the crew will be posted as the launch approaches, and STS-133 is currently scheduled to launch on November 1, 2010.
